Northern Cycling Lindsay Smyrk Memorial Handicap on 25th Feb 2024

posted in: Latest News
The first running of this handicap in Lindsays honour attracted a field of just over 30 riders to this out and back course under perfect conditions with a light Northerly.

Northerns very own President – Vince Sinni went solo for most of the day and came away with a comfortable win by over 2 minutes from the next place getter Greg Foster (17 min group) showing a good return to form.

It was also great to have 5 women competing & doing well today with Jodie Walker and Sharon Napoli taking out 3rd and 4th place respectively and Rae Lesniowska taking out 7th place. Hoping that this representation of women keeps building for future events.

The club was also very grateful to have Lindsays wife Caroline, daughter Kate and friend Tess who assisted with the presentations and spoke a few words to the crowd about how much the event meant to the family having the race named in Lindsays honour. Vince also recounted his time with Lindsay on holidays in Italy and how impressed he was learning about the impact Lindsay had on so many people at his service.

A successfully run race relies heavily on many of our regular contributors such as Bruce(time keeping/ hcp’ing), Faye(rego), Albert (ref), Bill (medical), Dave (setup/marshalling), Chooka (finish line/ refreshments). Please make a point of acknowledging the efforts of all our club volunteers and if you’re a regular Northern racer remember to do your bit to help out the club by ensuring 2 marshalling duties for primary members and 1 for add-ons per year is done. There have been issues lately filling positions and the committee is now considering auditing rider contributions so that races can go ahead safely.
