A big weekend of social and cycling activities capped off a fantastic 2016 and celebrations for the Club’s 40th anniversary.
Congratulations to all our award winners who took trophies and medallions home from our Presentation Night on Friday night at the Glenroy RSL. They included:
- 2016 Club Champions Phil Bramich and Jo Read
- The winner of the Harry and Mary Tams Award for most improved rider, David Rigby
- Winner of the Mary Tams Award for most improved female rider, Tamara Riddell
- Men’s Handicap and criterium champion, Darren Roberts
- Women’s criterium champion, Tamara Riddell
- Age champions Michael Borowski (40-44), Darren Roberts and Jo Read (45-49), Anthony Zanella and Jan Williamson (50-54), Phil Bramich (55-59), Terry Hodges (60-64) George Goodrope (65-69), Tommy Gray (70-74)
Perpetual trophies won throughout the year were also presented.
Tireless committee member, Albert Rain, was inducted as a Life Member, joining an elite group of current and former members with that honour, many of whom attended presentation night and shared their stories of the formative years of Northern.
Guest speaker Sarah Hammond – who was once a member at Northern – gave generously of her time to share her incredible experiences of the US Trans Am and Australian Race to the Rock endurance events.
A huge shout out to the many people who contributed to the success of Friday night – in particular secretary Tony Gherxi for his research and chasing up life members, and Jan Williamson and Jo Read who coordinated the event at the RSL. The feedback from those who attended has been overwhelmingly positive.
Celebrations continued at a family barbecue after crits at National Boulevard on Saturday afternoon where we had a past, current and future champion of the club cut the 40th anniversary cake – Harry Tams, Phil Bramich and Heidi Riddell. The cake, and about 120 barbecued snags, were enjoyed by all. Thanks to Jan and Kaye for cooking all those snags!
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to a terrific and historic weekend. We are indebted to our Club sponsors whose generosity has ensured that we have been able to provide competitive racing all year round – Michael Borowski from Gate Opening Systems, Heath Jackson from Culture of Cycling, Bob Miller from Flite Helmets and Nick Nomikos from Top Tech Panels.
